Best post-hockey beer

Pretty sure we all agree that the best post-hockey adult libation is beer--though there's probably a strong Jagermeister contingent, eh?

So... what's the perfect post-hockey beer? Southern Tier came out with this amazing pale ale with strong notes of grapefruit -- super refreshing (dammit, was a trial batch and I haven't found any lately, boo hoo). My sweetie favors his Guinness, but that is just too heavy after hockey. I like Paulaner Salvator doppebock... but with a cozy roast in the middle of winter, not when I'm stinkin hot and thirsty.

I like sour beers (O Duchess de Bourgone, I would buy you every day if I could afford you, you minx), so sometimes I choose Bell's Oarsman Ale.

Aside from the ubiquitous Bud/Miller/Coors run-of-the-mill stuff, what do YOU think is the best post-hockey beer?

So... car people

After my oil change, the shop said the front wheel bearing was loose on the passenger side. Cost to fix would be nearly $300.

Errr, what is a wheel bearing? Is this something I should get attended to right away?
My car is a 2004, so there are always little "eh you could fix this" things coming up. For instance, the Check Engine light stays on all the time, which I have been advised (NOT by the shop) is easily resolved by obscuring it with a small square of electrician's tape...

O car people of JMS, I beseech you for your wisdom.

new JMS-mobile

Totally not hockey related (except that this is how I get to games...)
I will need a new car in the next 18 months and so as I start saving up, I start to think about what would be best. It's always a head-scratcher for me and I thought this time I would throw it out on the forums and see what suggestions I get.

My current car is an '04 Hyundai Accent. It's been GREAT. When the car before this one (Mazda Protege) died, my best friend spent a weekend on Consumer Reports and told me to buy an Accent. Boy, was he right: this has been a good car for me.

But maybe there's another used car on the market that would be a better fit for the next purchase. I like the idea of a Prius (or similar), but I think they'll still be too expensive: I won't spend more than $7000 on a car (and would prefer to do around $5500). I need something reliable and SAFE... but for a one-person commuter car. I like small, but my car has to share the road with Expeditions and Suburbans and F-150s, so I'm not getting a Mini Cooper and get smushed if one of them hits me.

I know there's a lot of new technology out there for skid control and stuff... I am a big fraidy-cat when it comes to those bad icy road days we have every winter. But I don't know if that technology will have percolated down to my financial threshold by the time I'm looking to buy.

The Mazda was a manual transmission and that was fun. My friend who told me to buy the Accent actually bought a Subaru Forester for himself this year and has been talking about how awesome Subarus are. While I trust him, I also see that a used Subaru and a new Subaru are darn near the same in price, and I know I do not take good enough care of my cars (hangs head) to let myself buy something new.

Thoughts?

HOCKEY MARATHON

What is a "high scoring game" in your opinion? 5-4? 8-5? HOW ABOUT 2991 - 3260?!? Well at Chestermere Centre in Alberta Canada, that's exactly what the score is at the moment, and it's only going to get crazier

In support of Alberta Children's Hospitals cancer research and treatment programs, a group of 40 or so middle-aged rink rats have pulled together to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in a world record shattering game of hockey! The puck dropped back on May 6th and the game, which is in progress right now, is scheduled to end in a little less than 2 days from now (May 16th). That's 10 DAYS of continuous hockey! Donations can be made on their website: http://www.hockeymarathon.com .

Even if you're not planning on making a donation, we absolutely recommend you check out their website. There you can learn more about who is playing, check the score of the game, or even watch a LIVE FEED. At JMS our metaphorical hats are scattered across the ice for you, "Hockey Marathon"... and it's only fitting because you must all have hat tricks by now!

"Chili Peppers' Smith lives hockey dreams on the road"

A Detroit native, Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, still has hockey on his mind while he's touring with the band.

For the Michigan-born Smith, a lifelong infatuation with the Wings reached a new level in 1997, when he found himself in the locker room at Joe Louis Arena as the Red Wings celebrated their first Stanley Cup in 42 years. At the game to promote a charity hockey event, Smith gained access to the team's locker room, where he was quickly recognized. Moments later, he was drinking from the Stanley Cup.

...

A Los Angeles resident for decades, Smith has adopted the Kings as another NHL favorite. For the drummer, who occasionally attends Kings games when the band isn't touring, their current run to the Western Conference Finals has been exciting. And the longtime goaltender has been especially impressed by the play of Jonathan Quick.
"I'm a fan of Quick. He's played great all year," Smith said. "I'm a goalie fan, and he's an American guy, too."

Smith would like to have watched more of the Kings' recent surge through the postseason, but the band's hectic schedule has made that difficult. It still hasn't stopped him from crossing paths with a few NHL teams, though. As the Chili Peppers have spent the spring playing a number of NHL arenas, they've found their schedule constantly conflicting with many NHL teams.

"In Ottawa, we played and they had just lost in New York. Our dressing room is the team dressing room and I saw the scorecard and everything. It was kind of sad," Smith said. "We were in Montreal and they hired their new GM and they wanted to do the press conference at the arena, but we were doing our gig. So we kind of screwed that up for them."

By the time the band arrived for two shows at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., they found themselves squarely in the middle of the Eastern Conference Semifinal between the Devils and Flyers.

"We had Friday and Saturday there. So they [Flyers and Devils] played Sunday after the extra days off and the Flyers were complaining the ice was a little soft. I say Philly's a little soft," Smith joked. "So the Devils can thank us for the soft ice."

Smith's hockey fandom even came in handy when it was time for the band to hire a new guitar player. When guitarist Josh Klinghoffer turned out to be a Red Wings fan, the Chili Peppers' search was over.

"When he grew up, Sergei Fedorov was his favorite player. So we have a bond," Smith said. "I said, 'You can be in the band. You're cool.'"

"Sports' least-known all-time great"

From CNN...

Did you guess who it is?

(CNN) -- Martin Brodeur was unstrapping his goaltending pads after another victory, about to be rushed to a TV interview, when a reporter on deadline made a request. Could he answer just one quick question?
"Yes, I'm 40," Brodeur cracked, predicting the question before it could be asked. "For some reason, that's a big deal."
Well, it actually is, and the reason is simple: Brodeur couldn't celebrate the milestone -- his birthday was May 6 -- because he was too busy notching another win en route to leading the New Jersey Devils to the Eastern Conference Finals.
And now, as the playoffs move to the final two rounds, Brodeur has a chance to win the Stanley Cup at an age when most players already have hung up their skates and picked up their golf clubs.
Turning 40 usually means collecting your gag gifts and waking up with a hangover and a realization: You're not as young as you used to be. For Brodeur, it means doing what he's done his entire adult life: winning hockey games at the highest level in the sport.
No goaltender in NHL history has won more games than Brodeur: His 656 career victories are 105 more than Patrick Roy, who is second on the list. The next active goaltender on the all-time list, Roberto Luongo, has just 339, so it's a record that may never be broken.

Braemar renovations

From the Strib, emphasis mine:

Braemar Arena scores an update

Once a hockey palace, Braemar Arena is showing its age. Hockey boosters say the 46-year-old ice arena simply isn't up to today's standards or to the celebrated history of Edina Hornets hockey.

That's why they've started "The Drive for the Hive," an effort to raise money for an addition and remodeling that would restore Braemar's status as one of the region's premier hockey arenas.

The Edina City Council endorsed the concept last week, allowing planning for the project to proceed. Called the Hornet's Nest, the two-story addition would cost between $2.9 million and $3.4 million and would be built on the north side of the Braemar West arena. It would include four locker rooms, two bathrooms, a 10,000 square-foot training facility and a sporting goods store.

...

About one-quarter of the project cost, or about $740,000, would be raised through donations. Anderson said his group already has commitments for about $275,000, and a professional fundraiser has offered to help with the effort.

The project's cost would depend on how many improvements are added. For $2.9 million, the Hornet's Nest would include four locker rooms for boys and girls varsity and junior varsity hockey teams, bathrooms, offices for coaches, and equipment storage space. The new locker rooms would have open locker space, benches and flooring with the Edina High School Hornets logo.

The training facility would have areas for weight training, skating treadmills and puck shooting, with the sporting goods store nearby. The training center and store would be leased to private providers, Anderson said.

Edina's Park Board has suggested adding about $480,000 in other improvements to Braemar, including relocating the Zamboni storage room for safety reasons, expanding lobby space and creating an accessible pathway to the arena.

The other day, while enjoying my afternoon Caps/Rangers playoff game, it occurred to me that the announcers were spending a good deal of time talking about shot blocking - most likely because the shot counts were unusually low. At first they were talking about the how The Rangers were doing it well. A short time later they were praising the Capitals for their efforts batting down pucks, and at some point I stopped watching the game, and started thinking about the increase I've noticed in "blocked shots" in the last few years. Outside of the NHL I had subconsciously noted it's growing presence both in college and high school. It seems to me that in the last 3-4 years I had personally witnessed the sport collectively recognizing one of it's most underrated and valuable skills - shot blocking.

Every sport has it's most overrated and underrated skills. Overvalued skills tend to the "hero" skills like speed and power. Undervalued skills tend to be less flashy "team" skills like, rebounds, shots blocked, positioning, and awareness. There seems to be an undying question in sports: "What is more important? The Hero or the Playmakers?" "What kind of skills make up a strong team?" It's a question I can't answer - and more than likely the answer is, "you need a little of everything to be successful as a team." It is certainly a question worth considering. Especially in sports with salary caps (many - not all) and a limited number of "Hero" types (all sports) it does seem like a question that many teams struggle to find a balanced answer for.

My question to you hockey players is this: What SKILLS make a good HOCKEY team? Which skills are overrated, and which skills are underrated?

College hockey losing the cage?

From an article in USA Hockey:

...a transition away from full facial protection is gaining some steam, to the point where some predict that shields will be standard issue for college players as soon as next season.

It’s a debate that has been around for decades, and has some coaches and athletic administrators envisioning what they feel is a long-overdue change in college hockey, while some in the medical community are urging cautious steps forward.

... many on the college side ... see the full mask as a potential impediment to recruiting. It has been noted that American college hockey is the only level of the sport in the world where players over the age of 18 must wear full facial protection.

Interference

This is for the skater on the dark team at the Wakota lower level CS last night who insisted on continually lifting the sticks of players who were no where near the puck at the time. It was really irritating, and not only to me; just because you see something done on TV doesn't make it "legal." We don't have refs to enforce the rules, so we have to be on our honor.

56.1 Interference - A strict standard on acts of interference must be adhered to in all areas of the rink.

Body Position: Body position shall be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent, but must skate in order to gain or reestablish his proper position in order to make a check.

Custom-made, pro stock hockey sticks for the public? On the cheap? Yes!

To All Fellow JMS Players,

I am pleased to announce that I have become the Sales Rep in Minnesota for Base Hockey. Base Hockey is a new company that only manufactures custom-made, pro stock sticks for far less than what you might find at retail. As a customer, you choose your flex, curve/pattern and lie. Not only that, you may choose from a variety of color combinations, as well as having your name, number and team logo on the shaft. The fitting process is just like what golfers have done for them when getting golf clubs. The concept is truly grassroots and highly revolutionary in the hockey stick industry. From mite to adult, male or female, newbie to pro, each stick is built to your specifications. Something about the wheel or sliced bread comes to mind...You may order 1 or 100.

Are you over 6'0" like myself? Can't find a stick that is long enough without putting a wood extender plug into it? Have you purchased numerous sticks trying to figure out what works best for you? Are you buying sticks for your children figuring out the same thing? What of a blade pattern that gets discontinued that you just love? Are you using the right stick? Maybe you're not sure what you should be using! More than likely, unless you're a pro, no one has ever assisted in addressing these concerns. Especially new players, like here in JMS.

I can help. With all of these problems and more. If you live in MN and know what you want from perusing the website, I may order it for you. If you or your kids aren't sure what you need, or aren't happy with your current stick, I will be able to help you by walking you through the process. Would you like to see one of these sticks and get a feel for 'em? Demo sticks are on hand, contact me to schedule a fitting. In the near future, I will have a place where customers will be able to go through a shooting analysis of sorts, with your skates on! It's just a part of the personal touch and service that Base Hockey offers.

Since these sticks will not be offered in retail stores, I am hoping that a strong initial grassroots push will get this of and running (skating).

Read some of the reviews or comments on the corporate Facebook page, people are going bananas for Base sticks.

The updated version of the site is up with all of the curves/patterns that we offer, as well as new color combinations.

Go check it out!

Bunch of goalie gear $300 for everything or individual offers

I'm upgrading my goalie gear and getting rid of the stuff I don't use anymore. Shoot me an offer on something if you want to. I'm just trying to get a little bit of cash to help pay for the new stuff. I am a regular goalie so my catcher is on my left and my blocker is on the right.

I have a KOHO Catcher that is black and gray coloring. In pretty good condition, decent glove. I don't know the exact series off hand I can update this later or if you ask specifically I can tell you.
I have a Bauer Reactor catcher that is black blue and white. This is my primary catcher I have used it for about 25 games.
I have a Bauer Reactor Blocker that is black blue and white. This blocker is pretty beat up but still does its job.
I have a Brian blocker that is purple and gold. This blocker is in excellent condition. I used it for 1 game and ended up getting the Bauer blocker to match the rest of my equipment. There are a pair of eyes on the blocker that are kind of worn off but that is about the only thing wrong with this blocker.
Finally I have a pair of Brians leg pads. i don't know the size of them off hand, but I want to say they are around 29" or 30' they are black. They are decent. A strap is broken and the outside is worn.

I am open to offers on anything, or everything for $300. My phone number is 763-226-7125. Send me a text if you want to know more.

Bad Playoff Goal Calls?

Have NHL referees been a little lax these playoffs on how goals are getting scored? As a netminder, I appreciate the "don't touch the goalie" mentality, and with this article, I think Tim Thomas agrees.

Here are his thoughts on the Game 7 OT winner in the Boston/Washington series.
Plus, there's this infamous Game 6 "goal" scored by Ottowa:
And, of course, Lundvist's post game reaction.
