Beginner programs

I have a friend who is new to hockey and is just learning how to skate. I am trying to help teach him, but due to lack of outdoor ice, it's been difficult this winter to say the least. He's very motivated and really wants to learn, but not having grown up in the area and being a more advanced player, I'm not aware of where to get ice to just learn. I'm looking for either open ice like the stick and puck or a learn to play program. He wants to do the beginner level of AHA in the fall, but that's quite a ways away and would like to start sooner. Just wondering if anyone knows of or has any ideas. Thanks!

So I just signed up here and I want to join in on a level 1 game. I've never played organized hockey so the only quipment I own would be skates and a stick.
My question being what equipment should I pick up/bring to a game? Ultimately my goal is to be in the AHA sometime in the next couple years if not the end of this year.

I'm assuming if I go into Strauss or total hockey they would help me get fitted and setup?

Thanks for the help.

Oh btw I looked all over the site and the only thing I could find about equipment was having to wear breezers.

Goalpost Whackers!

OK - I have to gripe. I would like to know what people think.

Is it just me or is it annoying as hell when goalies (I can say this because I am one) rap the post over, and over, and over again when they don't need to.

I see too many... way too many guys rap the post on both sides over and over like it means something. It is so funny to see a guy getting ready for a face off on his glove side face off circle, only to rap the post two, four, six times starting with his glove side and ending with his blocker side back and forth of course.... then come out and set up. (At that point moving to the angle from the outside post) obviously at that point the goalie is not rapping his post for any other reason than to make noise and because he thinks it looks cool!

So for education purposes to all you jackwagons who don't know. There is a purpose to it - and its not to look cool, make noise, or be cocky.
As you are leaving your net to come out and cut off the angle, or when you are setting up to get into your ready position, a goalie will rap the pipe on the board side (ie if he is moving to the blocker side angle, he will rap the blocker side pipe and move out for the angle/set up) to "feel" where his net is behind himself.
That's the purpose, to "feel" the net behind you without looking over your shoulder and taking your eye off the play, the puck, the face off, whatever it is. That is how I was taught, that is what most tenders do. They don't abuse it. But for some others, its like a compulsive tick or something and it gets to the point of being ridiculous.

Not that rapping the post is bad, but it has a purpose and function. so Stop making a spectacle of yourself. And now that you know what it is supposed to be used for/as, maybe you all will use it correctly and stop annoying everyone by making us listen to the tubes ting every 30 seconds. If you like the sound that much, hang a wind chime in your net!

Tendon Guard Repair

So, I have a pair of Bauer One35s, and as you can see in the attached picture, the tendon guards are tearing. George's in St. Paul will repair and reinforce them for $45 a skate. Paying this price hardly seems worth it since these skates were my entry-level skates (I'm half way through my third year playing), they don't even make them anymore, and the few pairs you can find are going for about $100. So, paying $90 to repair a pair of 3-year-old skates worth $100 seems silly. On the other hand, I like them well enough, though to be fair, I really have nothing to which to compare them. So, the question is, do I replace them now or wait to the end of the season and get new ones for next year? Or, what the hell do the tendon guards do, besides the obvious (protect someone from slicing through one's achilles tendon)? Does it make any difference if they are hanging on by a thread?

Goalies,
In episode 48 of the classic Gilligan's Island television show, the fictitious American rock 'n roll band, The Mosquitoes, in trying to escape from their crazy fans, wind up with the castaways on the latter's island. Hoping the musicians will help them escape from the island, Ginger, Mary Ann, and Lovey (Mrs. Howell) form a singing trio, The Honeybees, to develop some comraderie with the visitors. Unfortunately, the women are so good that the Mosquitoes feel threatened by the possible competition, and in true Gilligan's Island form, return to the States and leave the castaways behind. Here's the song the Honeybees sang to impress The Mosquitoes. (I've included my annotations.)

Zamboni driver in Apple Valley accused of being drunk while resurfacing iceArticle by: Star Tribune Updated: January 31, 2012 - 3:25 PM

. Apple Valley police arrested a 34-year-old man Monday night for driving while intoxicated. His vehicle of choice? A Zamboni.

Officers were called to the Hayes ice arena shortly after 8 p.m. after people there noticed that a part-time employee who was grooming the ice with a Zamboni was driving erratically. When police arrived, the man was struggling to maneuver the ice-grooming machine off the ice. The man was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol, according to a news release.

He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested and taken to police headquarters for a blood-alcohol test. Test results have been sent to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for analysis, the news release said.

The man, who has not yet been charged, was convicted of drunken driving once in 2002 and twice in 1999, according to state records.

VMCC Tuesday ULCS CANCELED

With not one but two weeks in which the only ice was 10p or later (and so we originally declined), and then Valentine's Day, folks indicated that 28 days between Tuesday VMCC sessions was an awfully long time.

I heard their concerns and booked the earliest I could get for either this week or next week, which ended up being January 31 ice at 10p (just 15 minutes later than most of this session's games this season).
Alas, we had just three people signed up for this game the afternoon of the day before.

FORTUNATELY, the rink has let me drop the ice at no financial penalty (this is VERY rare--I think it's because the Zam driver didn't want to stick around so late!). Whew.

But, this means no game Tuesday night. Sorry, our next option for this session is February 21 (at 9.45, at which time it will fill as it has in the past).

Enjoy your time off and I'm sure everyone will be doing dryland exercises, right?

Best Place to Buy New Skates?

I'm a new player looking to purchase good hockey skates. I'd appreciate recommendations on the best stores to buy skates (and why) in Minneapolis / the southwest suburbs. I need good advice and a patience sales person, but I also want to find a place with good selection. I've done some research online, but I'd like to try a few pairs to find one that fits well.

I've also read that some stores offer free sharpenings and even free baking with purchase, which offsets the higher cost compared to online stores. However, I haven't found any policies on local stores' websites. It would be great to know what stores offer what with the purchase of new skates.

Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone,
A few years ago I built a PVC drying rack for my hockey gear and I decided to put together some plans for building it since it worked so well. And then we got a new computer and I lost them. But I found a hard copy that I've scanned and can email to anyone that may be interested.
It's maybe $20-$25 in materials and maybe 45-60 minutes to build. I've used mine for a few years and it really works well. These plans include a material list, cut lenths for all pieces and assembly instructions.

So if you are interested drop me a note at mheutmaker@hotmail.com. I'd be happy to share them.

Looking for Stick and Puck Time

I'm looking for some places to skate and work on skills without a pickup game. In Colorado (where I'm from) they call it Stick and Puck, but other places call it Skate and Shoot or Skills or something else (I know, that's fairly basic, but I've called rinks to ask about Stick and Puck time, and they get confused because they call it something else).

If you know of something, could you let me know. I have my weekdays to myself and want to work on some stuff and get a workout.

Thanks!

Some NHL players come to mind... making me think whatever happened to...???

Ziggy Palffy: Last NHL Season with the Pens in 2006; Plays with the Slovak National team, but otherwise retired.

Anson Carter: Last NHL season with the Hurricanes in 2007, retired. Runs the record label Big Up Entertainment in Atlanta.

Paul Kariya: Last NHL season was 2010 with the Blues, retired in 2011 due to concussion symptoms.

Dan Blackburn: Retired 2005 with the Rangers after suffering nerve injury to his shoulder that led him to play net with 2 blockers. He now manages the Goaltender Development Institute.

Jim Carey: Retired in 1999 with the Blues. Now CEO of OptiMED.

Roman Cechmanek: Last played with the Kings in the NHL 2004. Officially retired in 2009.

Derek Plante: Retired in 2001 from the Flyers. Currently is the asst mens hockey coach at UMD.

Manny Fernandez: Last played with the Bruins in 2009 but not officially retired.

Felix Potvin: Last played with the Bruins in 2004, not officially retired. A nice article about him and what he's doing now below. I always thought he had a huge ego, but seems to be a down to earth guy who left the game his own way...and in the right way!

RH Warrior Dolomite Spyne Sr. Stick For Sale-$75

I have for sale a RH Warrior Dolomite Spyne stick-$75. Curve: Draper Flex: 75. It was only used once on indoor ice. No chips or cracks. The stick has not been cut. The blade pattern is different than I am used to and I decided to continue using the pattern I currently use. I was over at Play It Again in Roseville the other day and they had this stick priced at $170. If you would like to see other pictures or have any questions, please send me a message.
