Tendon Guard Repair

So, I have a pair of Bauer One35s, and as you can see in the attached picture, the tendon guards are tearing. George's in St. Paul will repair and reinforce them for $45 a skate. Paying this price hardly seems worth it since these skates were my entry-level skates (I'm half way through my third year playing), they don't even make them anymore, and the few pairs you can find are going for about $100. So, paying $90 to repair a pair of 3-year-old skates worth $100 seems silly. On the other hand, I like them well enough, though to be fair, I really have nothing to which to compare them. So, the question is, do I replace them now or wait to the end of the season and get new ones for next year? Or, what the hell do the tendon guards do, besides the obvious (protect someone from slicing through one's achilles tendon)? Does it make any difference if they are hanging on by a thread?

My Bauer X:05's were that bad. And after only a little more than a year. I could've finished out the season with them, as I didn't feel like the guards were going to completely fail any time soon. But my wife got me a new pair of X:3.0's for Christmas. But if you hate breaking in new skates, get them repaired. I forgot how much that part hurt.

It looks like they're still mostly attached, no need to buy new ones if the skate still works fine.

Looks like the same skates I have. If they are the boot goes pretty high as it is to give good ankle support. But I would wait until summer or the end of the hockey season that's when the real good sales come in right before the new skates come out.

Ok so hailing from Charleston, SC.... It's hard to find good hockey repair. So I went down to the local red wing shoes to get my gloves repalmed. 10 bucks a pair. I'm VERY sure they have the ability to do the same with your skates. I know I had a buddy in juniors that would have his mom stitch the leather together.. sure it won't be quite "dri-fit" or whatever hokum they put in the boot these days are, but I guarantee you that it will fix it. and to answer any questions---- YES!!! it is VERY important to have that tendon guard! I played with one floppy and got nicked with a skate. I've heard stories of guys slicing their tendon like that as well. It's essentilally a career ender. DON'T TAKE THE CHANCE!!!
