If you do take it somewhere to have the wheel bearing fixed it is quite likely that they will also recommend new brake pads if they have not been replaced in a while. So kind of expect that when you consider how much you will need to spend. The check engine light could be any of hundreds of possible problems. As long as it is not blinking it is not likely to be a critical item but could impact performance or fuel economy. Finding an honest shop and/or mechanic is important. Cars are complicated and many people in the repair business cannot resist the temptation to exploit the average owner's ignorance. Avoid the places that try to scare or pressure you. Deal with places like Rob was talking about that will show you the worn parts and tell you what is needed and what can wait. Ask for the OBD II code for the check engine light and do an internet search. You may not fully understand everything about the code you have, but you will likely find enough information to decide what you want to do.

Great advice, thank you! I am taking to Car X soon--will report back on how awesome they were (hopefully) and how little it cost (also hopefully).

I recommend Parents Auto in Minneapolis off from 36th Street and Lyndale. Always do great work and usually well priced. My experiences with Bobby & Steves is that they are overpriced and have a habit of being a bit pushy.

The Car X in Eden Prairie right behind WalMart and by Bobby and Steves Eden Prairie is probably the best shop I''ve ever been to. They go over your car inside and out, list everything they see and rank the most pressing issue and even give you an esitmated time frame of recommendation to get the things fixed. I've taken cars in for them to check something and they always do the full check. They are not pushy about anything either, which is amazing. They even walk you out to the shop and show you exactly what they are talking about. They truly appreciate your business too. If I lived closer, I'd go there every time....but I usually do most of my own work. Next up is the alternator on my wifes car...ugh.

Amazing. I am so going there. Thank you!!
    Stupid alternators. Been there.

Thanks for the VERY useful feedback!

Yeah, I have a black '04 Hyundai Accent (named Kim Jong Il, cause I'm a chick and we name our cars... and it's boxy and black, like his glasses).
I know I'll need a new car soon -- trying to figure out what NEEDS to be done; I don't want to spend money on a car that I won't have in a year and a half.
Okay, so this needs to be done... but thankfully, not OMG RIGHT THIS MINUTE (thanks for that reassurance!).

I will take it back to Bobby & Steve's (at France and 494), they are the ones who priced it out--at $274, I believe. I like their service and I trust them, glad to know the price is in line.

As for the Check Engine light, I am too OCD to let that go too long. Two days after it came on, I took it to AutoZone and the kid there told me that the error was not in the engine, but that the relay to the light itself was malfunctioning. So I grit my teeth and ignore it, having no electrical tape.

You guys are awesome, thank you!
I am debating getting a Subaru Impreza for my next car, but I kind of made a bargain with myself that I won't spend more than $7000 on a car until I prove I can take better care of my cars (this last car was like $5500, so I am getting better, at least). A used Subaru is pretty damn close to the price of a new Subaru, so I will probably have to choose something else. I did like my Mazda Protoge, it was a manual transmission and that was awfully fun.

Guys, I hear your pleas, but the hard reality is that we have to have enough players.

JMS has demonstrated a phenomenal commitment to Level 1 icetimes and Level 1 players.

But, it's just not responsible for us to keep booking games when history has proven there are not enough people.

I understand each of you knows a few people who are excited about Level 1 games, but a few here and a few there are not enough.
It is easy to say, "I think it would work, so you should book it," but that costs you nothing to say and costs JMS a lot of money to enact--and then almost certainly lose when we don't have enough for a game, or to cover the ice.
Besides--we already HAVE tried that option: in recent weeks, we DID book the ice. And we DIDN'T get enough players.

I'm sorry, folks. I want Level 1 to be successful even more than you do. I'm working on a solution for next week. Any further discussion on this topic should be sent to support at JMShockey.
